Laboratory Animal Enrichment Symposium

April 15, 2010 - The Colonnade Hotel - Boston, MA

The Enrichment Symposium will be held at The Colonnade Hotel, 120 Huntington Avene, Boston, MA 02116 

A block of deluxe guest rooms has been reserved at the Colonnade Hotel under MSMR at the rate of $199.00/night plus 12.45% state & local taxes, fees and assessments. Call the Hotel at 617-424-7000 for reservations. The cut-off date for reservations at this rate is March 15, 2010.

Instructor information:

Joseph P. Garner, PhD
Purdue University
The goal of the Garner Lab's research is to integrate non-invasive methods used in human health and psychiatry with traditional methods in animal behavior and experimental psychology, to provide novel solutions to existing problems in animal behavior and welfare. Dr. Garner recently won the UFAW Professor William Russell Fellowship.

Hannah M. Buchanan-Smith, PhD
University of Stirling, Scotland - Department of Psychology
Professor Buchanan-Smith conducts fundamental and applied research into primate welfare, housing and husbandry in zoo and laboratory settings, and has special research interests in importance of positive human-primate interactions and choice, complexity and control in enrichment.

Kimberley Cohen, MS, DVM, DACLAM

Covance Research Products Inc.

 Kimberley Cohen received a Master of Laboratory Animal Science degree from Hahnemann University and her DVM from the University of Wisconsin Madison. She continued her post graduate studies at Wake Forest University of Health Sciences completing a three-year comparative medicine fellowship and laboratory animal medicine residency. During this time she provided veterinary care to a multitude of animal species including nonhuman primates. She also conducted pre-clinical safety studies for fusion protein cancer therapeutics. Upon completion of her training she accepted a position as the Attending Veterinarian at Covance Research Products in Cumberland, VA.  She is a diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.

Valerie J. Hare, BS
The Shape of Enrichment
With Karen Worley, Valerie founded The Shape of Enrichment, Inc. in 1991 and has been a principal ever since. In 2000, Valerie presented an enrichment mini-course at the Brazilian Zoo Congress in Belo Horizonte. With the help of its current instructors, that mini-course has evolved into The Shape of Enrichment Workshop and is designed to assist interested animal caretakers create enrichment plans for the animals in their care. Valerie has worked as a Research Animal Care Supervisor, Zoo Keeper, Behavioral Research Technician, and Enrichment Consultant. Valerie holds a BS in Biology and an AS as a Veterinary Technician.

Jackson Zee, MS

The Shape of Enrichment
Jackson Zee holds Associate degrees in animal health and as a paramedic, a BA in psychology, a BS in biology, and an MS in ecology. He pursued his certificate in clinical animal behavior in Australia then qualified for his license in the UK and US. His interest in protecting nature led him to working as an educator, then a wild animal keeper, curator, veterinary technician, lab technician, sanctuary manager, associate clinical animal behaviorist and conservationist with a interest in animal welfare and sustainable development. Jackson has been providing hands-on support and expertise with captive care of wild animals in rehabilitation programs, improving the quality of life of animals in captive settings and the reduction of cruelty towards animals. Jackson is currently affiliated with universities in the USA, China and the UK.
