* * * * * SCAW's Workshops on the new Guide update and IACUC Training Workshop Multiple Dates and Locations The Institute for Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR) has released the pre-publication version of the new 8th edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide). The Guide is used by most users of research animals, as well as regulatory and accreditation organizations. The final publication is due to be completed in August 2010. SCAW sees a need to discuss the changes in the new Guide. Therefore, SCAW will devote a large portion of time on the new Guide in two workshops: Chicago on October 21, 2010 and Bethesda, MD on September 10, 2010. SCAW will also have a session on the new Guide in the New York City IACUC Training workshop on September 27 2010, and the annual SCAW December meeting in San Antonio on December 6-7 2010. The changes and modifications in the new Guide are important to all who work with research animals, in all areas of academia, industry, and education. The Chicago and Bethesda workshops will cover all chapters in the 8th edition, with presentations and discussions on changes and effects on IACUCs and others in the animal research community. In Chicago and Bethesda all attendees will receive a copy of the new Guide as part of the registration fee. Go the SCAW web site www.scaw.com to view the four SCAW meetings this year and how each program addresses the new Guide. Registration can be done on line, via fax or regular mail. Due to space constraints at some places, there will be limited registration at some sites, so please register as early as you can.

Registration is now open for SCAW's Annual Winter Conference 6 - 7 December 2010 San Antonio, TX
THE EVOLUTION OF YOUR IACUC: PROMOTING SCIENCE AND COMPLIANCE
Co-sponsored with The University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare/NIH/DHHS and The United States Department of Agriculture/Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service/Animal Care.
Training is an important aspect for all members of the animal research community. Training is recommended by several regulatory and accreditation organizations and is an excellent way to ensure that research animals receive the best care and treatment based on performance standards. SCAW’s Winter Conference, held in beautiful downtown San Antonio on December 6-7, 2010, will provide an opportunity for members of the animal care community to learn about new techniques and to discuss current issues. For example, topics presented at this conference will help to fulfill the responsibility of USDA/APHIS/AC Policy 15 requirements that state “IACUC members should be trained in understanding the Animal Welfare Act, protocol review and facility inspections”.
As a bonus, the historic Menger Hotel is the site for this conference. It is an old historic building in the center of San Antonio and is only minutes from the famous Alamo and Riverwalk, where post-meeting time can be spent shopping or dining at many fine restaurants. At this time of year the Riverwalk is decorated with luminaria which adds to the charm of this unique area.
Look at the SCAW web site http://www.scaw.com/conference.htm for program and registration information.
